What is a Metaverse ? Description of a Metaverse, Metaverse Components and Terminology. The meaning of term 'Meta' and 'Verse'?
The term "metaverse" is a combination of two words: "meta" and "verse." Let's break down the meaning of each:
Meta: Derived from the Greek word "µet?" (metá), "meta" is a prefix that generally means "beyond," "after," or "transcending." In the context of the metaverse, "meta" implies that the virtual space goes beyond or transcends the physical world.Verse: In this context, "verse" is derived from the Latin word "universum," which means "the whole world" or "all that exists." "Verse" can also be related to the concept of a universe, as it shares the same root. In the case of the metaverse, "verse" refers to a digital universe or a collective virtual world.
When combined, the term "metaverse" signifies a digital universe that transcends the physical world, creating a virtual space where users can interact, explore, and engage with each other in various activities. So what is a Metaverse?
The term "metaverse" refers to a collective virtual shared space, created by the convergence of physically persistent virtual reality, augmented reality, and the internet. It's an expansive, interactive digital world that exists alongside the physical world and is accessible through various devices, such as smartphones, Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, and Augmented Reality (AR) glasses.
The metaverse offers an immersive experience where users can interact with each other, create and explore digital environments, and participate in a wide range of activities. These activities can include socializing, gaming, shopping, attending events, collaborating, and creating or consuming digital content.
In the broader sense, the metaverse represents a new era of the internet, where virtual experiences become more integrated with our daily lives, blurring the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds.
The concept of the metaverse has its origins in science fiction, particularly from the 1992 novel "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson. However, in recent years, it has gained traction in the technology industry as companies like Facebook changed its name to 'Meta'. Microsoft, and other tech giants have also invested heavily in developing metaverse platforms.
How the metaverse intersects with Web3? To summarize, the Metaverse is a way of 'Spatializing Digital Worlds' rather than just seeing information laid out on a screen in 2D in our present day internet (also called Web2). You can basically construct entire universes in 3D to either surround what it is that you're doing or to embody what it is that you're doing. The Spatializing Digital World has Digital Twins of real-world assets and Avatars of real people who interact with each other and the Digital Twins in the Spatializing Digital World.
Metaverse is the next generation massively-scaled and interoperable network of real-time-rendered 3D virtual worlds which can be experienced synchronously and persistently by an effectively unlimited number of users each with an individual sense of presence; while supporting continuity of data, such as history, identity, communications, payments, entitlements, and digital twins of real-world objects.
Many of the emerging Web3 internet technologies like Blockchains combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR) and Extended Reality (XR) makeup the Metaverse puzzle. It is real-time, 3D World creation, virtual reality and even neuroscience. We've seen this concept a lot in literature, in films, in research but it started to happen organically over the years in form of Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) Games - which are a type of Metaverse in their own right.
As we are now utilizing these technologies like virtual reality and faster internets, Metaverse(s) are actually starting to get built 'for purpose' which is a really interesting point in history in itself. And furthermore, with Technologies like Blockchain, Unreal Engine 5 Software and immersive
Virtual Reality (VR) and Extended Reality (XR) user interfaces coming out, we are starting to see a few the Metaverse puzzles gradually coming together.
The foundation for the Metaverse has been in development for the last 20 years through games, virtual experiences, and technologies; now we are beginning to see the emergence of practical applications (consumer and enterprise) The Metaverse will be also viewed as the user interface for Web3, similar to the role the browser played with the internet.
