# X-Ai's Grok

**X-Ai's Grok is open source**. However, there are some nuances to consider:

* **Open-sourced model:** The core AI model powering Grok, called **Grok-1**, is open-sourced and available on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license. This allows anyone to access and use the underlying technology for research, development, and even creating their own AI applications.
* **Closed-source components:** While the core model is open source, other components of Grok, such as the API and user interface, remain closed-source. This means it's currently not possible to directly interact with Grok or run it independently without relying on xAI's infrastructure.
* **Potential future open-sourcing:** xAI has expressed a possibility of open-sourcing the entire Grok platform in the future, possibly with a six-month delay after launch. This would offer complete transparency and allow greater community involvement in shaping the development of Grok.

So, while not everything about Grok is currently open source, its core model being accessible is a significant step towards transparency and community-driven development in the field of large language models.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://metaverse-imagen.gitbook.io/ai-tools-research/large-language-models-llms/open-source-llms/x-ais-grok.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
